How Easily Our Focus is Shifted

I have become overwhelmed with school and other obligations. I have made little time for my spiritual growth these past four months and I have suffered as a result. I did manage to plant a nice garden at my mother's house. The pumpkins are coming in nicely and the tomatoes have been ripening for a few weeks now. When I am busy I long for a simple life. I crave a peaceful existence. Yet when it comes to living that life, it gets placed on the backburner. Instead of meditating or tending the garden, I play on the computer looking at the same websites and complaining that I am bored. What has happened to our culture?

It wasn't that long ago that most of the day was dedicated to farming and household duties. Then came all the gadgets to simplify our lives...but have they? Instead of being self-sustaining and active, many of us have become complacent and lazy. I often wonder what it would take to give me a true reality check. It is so easy to get swept up in the modern world. The media teaches us that we must have a cell phone or an iPod. Cities are built in a way now that you must have a car to get around (I lived in a city with no bus system or sidewalks for a time). So how do you simplify? I guess step one is to stop accumulating. Simply stop buying crap you don't need anyway. If you have to buy, make an educated choice. One of AODA's recommendations for the Earth Path is using hand powered appliances. That would 1) get you more active 2) save energy.

I guess this post is more of a lament than anything else. I often dream about a simple lifestyle where I could pack up and move at a moments notice, instead I pile belongings around me. Most of them unused. Small steps I guess....
